Here are images of dusty arid plateaus under a cloudy African sky…this is Maseru. Quite a switch from the ruby colored forest hills of Witten, Germany. The clay dirt, high altitude and close sun give the feeling of a dry sauna…even with the onset of the rainy season. Gorgeous people, soft-spoken, shy and warm greet me around every corner. My participants are from such hard backgrounds, some with very little finance, family or support. Yesterday, many of the homeless ones gathered all the plastic bags they could find for protection from a potential overnight shower. There is no self-pity here, only resilient spirits held strong and deep within a shy beauty. Perhaps this is because the media doesn’t reign supreme on culture here. There are no taunts of needing more, little extravagance and very few mirrors for external inspection. People have what they have and seem to love who and what they are. Their needs are human, natural and simple. Our local partners Kick 4 Life do an incredible job and providing all kinds of support. They are as inspiring as the people. You can find them at www.kick4life.org. Its an honor to be here.
